How the model handles a two-game night.

The WNBA schedule is not the NBA schedule. There are nights with eight games and there are nights with one. Most nights fall in between. Two-game nights are common, and they are the most useful nights to understand if you want to know how the model actually behaves.

What a small slate does to signal volume.

The discipline filter is the same regardless of how many games are on the board. It asks one question: does this game carry an edge large enough to clear the threshold. The answer is yes or no per game. The slate size does not change the answer.

What slate size does change is the probability that any signal fires at all. On a 6-game NBA night, the model has six chances to find an edge that clears the filter. On a 2-game WNBA night, it has two. Most two-game nights produce zero signals. A few produce one. Almost none produce two.

This is not a flaw. It is the mechanics of a small slate meeting a tight filter.

Why we do not soften the filter.

The temptation on a small slate is to lower the bar. Two games, no signal, the user opens the app and sees nothing. The instinct is to find something to publish.

That instinct is wrong. A signal published at a lower edge threshold is a worse signal, not a different one. The math does not improve because the slate is small. The closing line value does not improve because the user is waiting. Publishing a marginal signal on a quiet night is exactly the behavior that erodes long-term performance.

Sharp Principle
A quiet night is not a problem to solve. It is information about the slate.

What the model does with the extra attention.

When the slate is small, the model spends more of its compute budget on each game. Line histories are pulled further back. Injury context is checked against deeper historical patterns. The closing line projection is run with tighter confidence intervals.

In practice, this means a two-game night where one signal fires is often a higher-conviction signal than a six-game night where one signal fires. The model has had more room to verify its read on the specific matchup.

Observation
Across the 2025 WNBA season, signals fired on slates of three games or fewer beat closing line value by an average of +1.8 points. The full-season average was closer to +1.4. Smaller slates produced fewer signals but stronger ones.

What you see in the app.

On a two-game night with no signal, the home screen shows the pass-day card. Capital preserved. The market did not produce an edge tonight, and that is the honest reading of the slate.

On a two-game night with one signal, the signal card publishes with the same construction as any other night. The slate size does not change the format, the disclosure, or the math.

Why this matters
The number of signals on any given night is downstream of the slate, not a target the model is trying to hit.
