A losing streak does not mean the market has adapted. Markets do evolve, but they do not recalibrate overnight. If the model was profitable last month, it did not become obsolete this week. Market regime changes happen gradually, over months, and they are detectable through calibration metrics, not through short losing runs.

A losing streak does not mean you should change your unit size. Reducing your bet size after losses is a form of loss aversion that reduces your exposure precisely when the model is statistically likely to revert to its mean. Increasing your bet size to "make it back" is the classic gambler's ruin scenario. The correct unit size during a losing streak is the same unit size as during a winning streak.


What a Losing Streak Does Mean

It means you are betting. That is all. A system that never loses is a system that never bets, or a system that is lying about its record.

The productive response to a losing streak is to check the process, not the results. Ask these questions:

Is the model still calibrated? Check the calibration dashboard. Are predicted probabilities matching actual outcomes across confidence buckets? If 55% predictions are hitting at 55%, the model is fine. The streak is variance.

Is CLV still positive? If the model's picks are still beating the closing line during the losing streak, the edges are real. The outcomes are noise. Positive CLV during a losing streak is the strongest signal that the process is sound.

Has anything structural changed? New season, major rule changes, significant market structural shifts? If no, the model's training data is still relevant.

If all three answers are reassuring, the correct action is no action. Continue following the system at the same unit size. The math will revert.


The Behavioral Traps

Losing streaks trigger specific, predictable behavioral patterns. Knowing them in advance is the best defense.

The auditor: You start second-guessing individual picks after the fact. "I knew the Celtics were too many points." You did not know that. You are constructing a narrative to explain randomness.

The adjuster: You decide to skip the next signal or bet half units. You are now running a different system than the one with a demonstrated edge. Your future results will reflect a system that does not exist in any backtest.

The freelancer: You stop trusting the model and start placing your own bets. Your selectivity rate spikes. Your discipline score drops. The bets you add do not have a quantified edge. They have an emotional justification.

The quitter: You cancel your subscription. You leave during the exact period of variance that every profitable bettor experiences. You will never see the reversion.

All four responses feel rational in the moment. None of them are. They are emotional reactions to a statistical certainty.
