You see the model fire a pick at 1 PM. Spread is -3.5. By tip-off, it’s -5. The pick is the same, but the bet isn’t. Most people don’t understand why.

Lines Are Living Things

An opening line is a hypothesis. The sportsbook posts a number, and the market reacts. Sharp money moves first. Public money follows. Injuries get reported. Rotation updates hit Twitter. Each piece of information pushes the number toward its true resting point.

By the time you place your bet, the line in front of you might be meaningfully different from the line the model evaluated. And that difference matters more than most bettors realize.

The CLV Problem

Closing Line Value - the difference between the line when you bet and the line at close - is the single most reliable indicator of long-term betting skill. Not win rate. Not units won over a week. CLV.

If you consistently bet spreads before they move in the direction of your pick, you’re capturing value. If you consistently bet after they move past you, you’re giving it back.

This is why timing matters. Not in a “gut feel” way, but in a structural way. A pick at -3.5 with a model probability calibrated to that number is a different bet than the same pick at -5. The expected value changed. The edge may have evaporated entirely.

> The pick didn’t change. The price did. And in this game, price is everything.

Why We Re-evaluate Before Every Game

Sharp Picks checks the current line against the model’s edge calculation before every tip-off. If the line has moved enough to push the expected edge below our threshold, the pick gets pulled.

This feels counterintuitive. You fired a pick six hours ago - how can you un-fire it? But the alternative is worse: recommending a bet where the edge no longer exists just because it existed earlier in the day.

A pick published at noon isn’t the same pick at 7 PM if the spread moved two points. The game is the same. The teams are the same. But the price is different, and the price is the bet.

What This Means for You

When you see a Sharp Picks notification, act on it promptly. Not recklessly - check your book, confirm the line is still in range. But understand that edges are perishable. The market is efficient and getting more efficient every season.

The window between when an edge appears and when it closes is shrinking. The model finds those windows. Your job is to be ready when they open.

> WHY THIS MATTERS > > Sharp Picks doesn’t just tell you who to bet. It tells you when the bet is worth making - and when it’s not, even if the pick hasn’t changed. The line is the bet.
